Why red?

Advantages of red-orange light in aviation safety.

  • Visibility and contrast: Despite the peak sensitivity of the human eye towards the green-yellow part of the spectrum, red-orange light at 628 nm offers excellent visibility due to its contrast against the blue and green backgrounds of the sky and terrain. This contrast ensures that the flasher is noticeable, particularly in diverse lighting conditions.
  • Symbolic significance: In the context of aviation and beyond, red is universally associated with caution and alertness. This symbolic significance reinforces the message of danger and the need for awareness among pilots, making red an optimal choice for signalling and collision avoidance.
  • Efficiency and luminosity: The high efficiency of 98.8% of our flasher design ensures that energy conversion into light is maximised with minimal loss to heat. This efficiency is crucial for maintaining the high luminosity needed for visibility.
  • Light scattering: The wavelength of light directly influences its scattering in the atmosphere, with shorter wavelengths (such as blue and green) scattering more than longer wavelengths (such as red). This principle is illustrated by Rayleigh scattering, which explains why the sky appears blue and why the sun appears red at sunrise and sunset. The reduced scattering of red light means that it can maintain its intensity over a longer range, enhancing the aircraft’s visibility without being diffused or dispersed.
  • Regulatory compliance: This choice aligns with the new FAI competition requirements (IGC Bureau) and CAA / EASA (CS-STAN Issue 4, CS-SC036B) recommendations, ensuring regulatory compliance and broad applicability across general aviation.
